━━ Supplies List: Foundations of Still Life Painting

Painting Supplies

The paints and mediums you use are a personal decision and there are many great brands out there. Below is a list of materials you will need on hand for this workshop. If you need help ordering paints and professional supplies, I’ve partnered with Trekell Professional Art supplies to provide a curated list of paints, mediums and panels for you to choose from. Trekell will send you two free brushes, (1) Crimson Taklon filbert and (1) Golden Taklon round when you order supplies for this workshop.

Brushes

Use the brushes you like. I love brushes. I recommend mostly rounds and filberts of various size, from small to medium. For fine details, synthetic rounds (my choice) or sables.

Trekell Brand brushes and size recommendation.

  • Crimson Taklon (choose the handle length you are comfortable with) — sizes: 20, 10, 6, 4, Filbert

    sizes: 8, 6, 2, Rounds

  • Golden Taklon (I prefer shorter handles) — sizes: 6, 4, 1, 10/0 Rounds

  • Protégé Plus, Synthetic Kolinsky — sizes ranging from 0 to 2

  • 1 inch wide flat or 1/2 inch mop brush

Painting Surface

There are many resources for professional primed panels (Trekell, Ampersand, Artefex, Raymar, Etc) or canvas for painting. Trekell Art Supplies has many choices of panels and is recommended. I prefer the very smooth Quadruple Oil Primed linen on panel. For Canvas, I recommend a very fine weave that is at least double primed with Oil or Acrylic gesso. Choose what you are comfortable with based on your budget.

Handmade gessoed panels should be primed with at least 5 coats of gesso and lightly sanded between layers and sanded smooth on the last layer. A loose priming of the back is also recommended to keep the panel from warping.

  • 12 x 16 primed panel
